How to Identify Storm and Shingle Damage: A Visual Field Guide

Learn how to spot hail impact bruises, wind uplift crease lines, thermal blistering, and granule loss on residential asphalt shingles.

Following a severe thunderstorm, hail front, or gale-force wind event, knowing how to evaluate your roof for damage is vital for protecting your property and filing timely homeowner insurance claims. However, identifying legitimate storm damage requires distinguishing between genuine weather impacts and standard environmental aging.

This guide details the specific visual and tactile indicators of asphalt shingle damage, explaining what caused each condition and what repair steps are necessary to maintain roof integrity.


1. Hail Damage: Bruises, Pits, and Granule Displacement

Hailstones strike roof slopes at terminal velocities exceeding 50 to 80 miles per hour, transferring substantial kinetic energy directly to the shingle's asphalt core.

Visual & Tactile Characteristics

  • Random Impact Pattern: Unlike foot traffic scuffing, hail impacts appear randomly distributed across all roof slopes facing the direction of the storm front.
  • Circular Indentations: Hail strikes create small, circular craters where mineral granules have been crushed or knocked loose.
  • The "Bruise" Test: Gently press your thumb into the center of a suspected hail crater. If the underlying fiberglass mat feels soft, spongy, or yields under pressure, the structural fiberglass core has fractured.
  • Black Substrate Exposure: Fresh hail impacts expose the dark, glossy black asphalt substrate beneath the granules. Over subsequent weeks, UV radiation oxidizes the exposed asphalt, turning it dull and brittle.

Why Hail Damage Must Be Addressed

While a hail impact might not leak immediately, the loss of protective granules allows solar UV rays to bake the exposed asphalt mat, resulting in micro-cracks and active leaks within 6 to 18 months.


2. Wind Uplift Damage: Creased and Displaced Shingles

High-velocity storm winds flowing over a roof ridge create aerodynamic uplift pressure, similar to an airplane wing. If wind uplift exceeds the bond strength of the shingle's thermal adhesive strip, damage occurs.

Visual & Tactile Characteristics

  • Horizontal Crease Lines: When wind lifts a shingle tab upward and folds it backward, a distinct horizontal line forms across the top of the tab approximately 1 inch below the overlapping shingle.
  • Broken Adhesive Bonds: Gently slip a thin putty knife beneath the lower edge of a shingle. If the tab lifts freely without resistance, the thermal sealant strip has failed.
  • Torn Nail Fasteners: In severe windstorms, shingles are torn completely away from the roof, leaving exposed nail heads and torn asphalt collars behind.

Why Wind Damage Must Be Addressed

Once a shingle tab is creased, its structural integrity is permanently compromised. Subsequent moderate winds will easily lift the tab again, driving wind-blown rain beneath the underlayment and soaking structural plywood decking.


3. Thermal Blistering vs. Hail Impacts

Many homeowners mistake thermal blistering for hail damage, but they have completely different origins and insurance implications.

How to Distinguish Blistering:

  • Origin: Thermal blistering occurs when moisture or air pockets trapped within the shingle mat expand during extreme summer heat, typically due to inadequate attic ventilation.
  • Visual Appearance: Blisters are small, pimple-like bumps that eventually pop, leaving tiny pinhole craters.
  • The Difference: Hail strikes are indented depressions that fracture the mat downward. Blisters are raised eruptions that burst outward. Unlike hail, thermal blistering is considered a manufacturer/ventilation maintenance issue and is rarely covered by storm insurance.

4. Excessive Granule Loss and Bald Shingles

Asphalt shingles are coated with ceramic-clad mineral granules to shield the petroleum asphalt from solar UV rays, provide Class A fire resistance, and impart color.

Warning Signs of Advanced Granule Loss:

  • Piles in Gutters: Granules accumulating in gutter channels or washing out of downspouts onto splash blocks indicate natural shingle aging.
  • Shiny or Fiber Exposure: If large sections of shingles display shiny black asphalt or yellow-white fiberglass matting, the protective granules have worn away.
  • Curling Edges: Bare shingles quickly dry out, causing the edges to curl upward ("cupping") or downward ("clawing").

How to Conduct a Safe Ground-Level Inspection

Homeowners should avoid climbing on ladders or walking on steep roofs. Instead, conduct an initial ground evaluation:

  1. Use Binoculars: Stand in your yard and use high-magnification binoculars to scan each roof slope on a bright, clear day.
  2. Inspect Soft Metals: Look at aluminum gutters, downspouts, metal roof vents, and AC compressor units at ground level. If these soft metal components show dents and dings, your shingles almost certainly sustained hail strikes.
  3. Check for Shingle Debris: Walk the perimeter of your home and inspect flowerbeds, lawns, and driveways for detached shingle tabs or loose slate fragments.
